Tokyo is a great city to visit. If you love shopping for fashions or high tech gadgets, or if you love dining out then Tokyo is an affordable gourmet paradise.
Recently many big hotels have opned in Tokyo. You have the Mandarin Oriental which is in Nihonbashi. Then you have the Peninsula facing Hibiya park. You also have the hyatt in Nishi-Shinjuku. The four seasons etc.
Although these hotels are very luxurious and modern, they are not cheap and cost alot more than japanese hotels or ryokans ( japanese traditional inn )
Here are some other accomodation options:
Japanese Ryokans: Most of these are in the countryside, but there are some in Tokyo especially around the asakusa area which has a large temple and is popular with tourists.
Mid range business hotels: These cost alot less than the big chain hotels and you still get a nice modern room with breakfast. Around Tokyo station there are a few nice ones. The marunouchi hotel in the tokyo/marunouchi area is one i stayed at. I had a corner room on the 34th floor with an amazing view and automatic blinds.
Capsule hotels:
You sleep in a capsule, like on a submarine. With space being a premium in Tokyo and the last train stopping at aroun 12.30 these are popular with inebriated salarymen who miss there last train home to the suburbs. There may be a small TV inside your capsule and they have shower areas too. These are for men only. If you are an ex-submariner or a vampire then you will propably love it, if your in any claustraphobic then give it a miss.
Love hotels:
Usually found near train stations, these are garish or kitschy looking hotels for couples. You can rent a room for 3-4 hours or over night. Each room has a different design, some have ahem. mirrored ceilings, others have bondage chairs, dungeons. They usually have a light control panel above the bed, a machine selling dildos and vibrators, mood lights in the bath etc.
These places are funky and if your a couple then a trip to japan would not be complete without a stay in a love hotel. Check out the love hotel area of shibuya which is not far from the station. There are a lot of love hotels in Ikebukuro, the kabukicho side of shinjuku and near most big stations.
